Diana's Revenge Dress Recreated

Updated: Nov 26, 2021

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. That certainly seemed to be the case when Princess Diana stepped out in a rather revealing dress that screamed: “look what you’re missing.”

Last week, the most famous revenge dress of modern times was recreated on the set of The Crown season five. Elizabeth Debicki, who has taken over the role of Princess Diana, was pictured emerging from a car wearing an off-shoulder LBD with sheer black tights and a triple-strand pearl choker, a black clutch bag raised to shield her decolletage - a method which the late Princess famously deployed to remain demure in front of photographers when she was wearing particularly low-cut outfits.

The scene harks back to the evening of 29 June 1994, when Prince Charles publicly confessed his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles for the first time in a TV interview with Jonathan Dimbleby. Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales made a last-minute decision to attend the Serpentine Gallery’s summer party, offering her a chance to be photographed just as her estranged husband’s confessions were being broadcast to the world.

She’d previously decided the dress, by Christina Stambolian, was too risqué, having bought it on a shopping trip with her brother; but, for that night, it was a perfect statement of the freedom, confidence and sexiness that she wanted to project.

Season 5 of The Crown is set to be released in November 2022.
