Oscars of Photography
Celebrating its 40th anniversary and “the Best in Established Contemporary Photographic Talent,” the Association Of Photographers (AOP) has announced the photos shortlisted in its annual photo competition. Known as the ‘Oscars’ of the photography world, the AOP Photography Awards “celebrate professional excellence in the creative photography and image-making industry.” The image above is one of the finalists and shows artist Margot McDaid behind a portrait at her studio. The Power of Kelp
Scientists have discovered that kelp forests provide powerful protection against storms in coastal communities. Much like mangroves, researchers found that dense kelp beds could knock down as much as 70 percent of a wave’s energy before it reached the shore, giving vulnerable coastlines a natural shield against erosion and storm damage, an especially helpful discovery as storms grow in intensity and frequency.

Lake Tahoe
A new joint effort by California and Nevada is protecting Lake Tahoe from a record amount of polluted runoff. By restoring wetlands and streams, limiting dust from roads and construction sites, and improving stormwater systems, the states dramatically reduced pollutants that fuel algae growth and are known to reduce Lake Tahoe’s world-famous clarity and water quality.

Good News For Gamers
First Super Mario Bros., then Minecraft, now Call of Duty. Paramount has signed a film deal with Microsoft-owned video game publisher Activision to bring its Call of Duty franchise to the big screen. Under the partnership, Paramount will develop, produce, and distribute a live-action feature film based on the Call of Duty universe, which encompasses more than 30 mainline games released since the original CoD debuted in 2003. The valuation of the mega deal was not disclosed, but it's likely to be a big hit as the video game franchise sold 500 million copies worldwide and brought in over $30 billion in revenue.

Thoughtful Gift?
One couple’s anniversary gift from the mother-in-law has lots of people in stitches. She gave them a monogrammed vase, but when the couple unwrapped it, they noticed the letters spelled out something a little… unexpected. With the husband’s first initial A, the wife’s S, and their shared last name also starting with S, the vase proudly reads: ASS. Sometimes the best gifts are the ones that make you laugh the hardest.
100% Wind & Solar
South Australia has locked in federal funding to ensure that it becomes the first non-hydro grid in the world to reach 100 percent net renewables, reports Renew Economy. The funding deal means that the federal government will underwrite a minimum one gigawatt of new wind and solar generation capacity and another 400 MW (1,600 MWh) of storage - to ensure it meets its target of 100 per cent net renewables by 2027. South Australia already leads Australia - and the world - with a wind and solar share of around 70 percent over the last 12 months. The addition of the new capacity, along with the new Project Energy Connect transmission link from NSW, will enable it to become the first in the world to reach 100 percent net renewables based around wind and solar.
