20th Anniversary

If your holiday season includes a standing appointment with a viewing of The Holiday, this one’s for you: the 2006 rom-com is being re-released in participating theaters for one day only on Friday 11 December to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary. Yes, this year marks two decades since audiences first watched Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) swap homes over the holidays, only to stumble into whirlwind romances. It’s also the movie that brought us arguably England's dreamiest cottage. If you can't make it to the cinema, it will also be streamable on Disney+ and Hulu. Maxxing

The concept of optimizing one's life came sharply into focus in 2026 and that's why Dictionary.com picked "maxxing" as its latest Word of the Year. "Maxxing is short for 'maximizing,'" says Dictionary.com. "This trendy term can be used on its own or added to the end of any word to convey you're doing something to the fullest or optimizing it as much as possible." The word rose through the cultural lexicons of Gen Z and Gen Alpha quickly, and now works as a noun, verb, adjective and adverb all at once. Leveling up your workout routine? Gymmaxxing. Your personal care practices? Healthmaxxing. How about goodnewsmaxxing?

Swan Lake

A teenage photographer has turned a misty morning and a lake full of swans into an award-winning wildlife image. Szymon Bartold's Swan Lake captures the birds gliding through glowing orange hues at sunrise, their silhouettes reflected in the water's surface to create an almost mystical scene. As mute swans rose majestically from the mist, bathed in golden light, he pressed the shutter. The delightful image has been awarded the top prize in the 14-17 years Youth Category of the prestigious GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2026 competition. Speaking of youthful success...

Youngest Ever?

Kimi Antonelli will have another chance to claim his maiden Formula 1 championship at this weekend's Mexican Grand Prix after narrowly missing out on securing the title in Texas. The 20-year-old converted pole position into his ninth win of the season at the US Grand Prix, but Lewis Hamilton's fourth place and George Russell's eighth kept the title fight alive for at least another week. If Antonelli finishes in the top nine in Mexico City on Sunday, he will be champion. It would not matter what Russell and Hamilton do in that scenario. The only way the title fight goes to Brazil is if Russell wins and Antonelli finishes 10th or lower, or Hamilton wins and Antonelli finishes outside the points. If Antonelli wins, he will be the youngest ever world champion. Sebastian Vettel won this accolade aged 23 in 2010.

Unique Artefact

An artefact believed to date back to the late Roman period has gone on display as part of an exhibition chronicling thousands of years of an English village's history. The carved bone box was unearthed during an excavation in Broadway, Worcestershire, and archaeologists said they had never seen anything like it before. The bone box, which was carved from roe deer bone and features intricate circular patterns, was recovered from the grave of a young woman, and Jamie Wilkins, who led the excavation, described it as "extraordinary". Some believe the find could offer new insight into the lives, beliefs and craftsmanship of the people who once occupied the north Cotswolds.
