New to The Line-Up

The Oscar-nominated actor Saoirse Ronan is reportedly set to play Linda McCartney in Sam Mendes’ The Beatles - A Four-Film Cinematic Event. According to Deadline, multiple sources have claimed that the star of Little Women and Lady Bird will play the first wife of Paul McCartney in the upcoming set of biopics. The singer will be played by Paul Mescal. Each of the four films will tell the story of a different Beatle with Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. “The Beatles changed my understanding of music,” Mendes said. “I’ve been trying to make a movie about them for years.” He added: “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation. I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.”

Momentous

According to independent think-tank Ember’s 2025 mid-year report, renewables have produced more power than coal globally for the first time - a historic first. How? Solar output jumped 31 percent from last year and wind added another 7.7 percent. Coal fell, led by declines in China and India.

Forest Protections

Some excellent news for the Amazon as Peru protects half its northern Amazon carbon in a new reserve co-managed with Indigenous Kichwa and Bora peoples. The Bajo Putumayo-Yaguas Communal Reserve links protected areas along the Colombian border to safeguard 53 percent of all carbon in the northern Peruvian Amazon. Suriname followed with its own announcement at Climate Week. One of the world’s few net-carbon-sink nations pledged to permanently protect 90 percent of its tropical forests: a national plan will direct climate finance toward Indigenous stewardship to preserve one of the planet’s most forested nations.

Magic of Sharing

On NBC's The United States in World Affairs in 1949, Charles F. Brannan, United States Secretary of Agriculture at the time, said these wise words on the magic of sharing what you know: "If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."

World Animal News reports that Vogue has ended the use of fur across all 29 editions - a major cultural turn for luxury fashion. The policy follows years of advocacy from animal-welfare groups and reflects a wider industry pivot toward ethical, innovative materials.

Feeling Safe

Feelings of global safety reach record high. How’s that for an unexpected statement? Gallup’s 2025 Global Safety Report finds that 73 percent of people feel safe walking alone at night, the highest level recorded since Gallup began asking the question. Global perceptions of safety rose steadily between 2014 and 2020 and then stalled during the covid pandemic and its aftermath. The rebound in 2024 is driven by gains in the Asia-Pacific, Western Europe, Latin America, Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa regions.
