Happy Thanksgiving

OGN wishes a Happy Thanksgiving to all our readers, where ever you may be. Don't miss today's collection of inspiring quotes about the joys of Thanksgiving, including this one - which sets the tone rather well: "What I love about Thanksgiving is that it’s purely about getting together with friends or family and enjoying food. It’s really for everybody, and it doesn’t matter where you’re from."

Shakti Empowers Women

Karnataka is the most recent Indian state to make bus travel free to women, a program called Shakti, a Hindi word for strength. Delhi was the first, in 2019, giving out free, pink paper tickets to women. More than 1 billion have been used so far, the government said earlier this year, reports Bloomberg. “These policies suddenly open up new opportunities for women,” said Satya Arikutharam, an independent mobility expert. It's a wildly successful and liberating program, and Karnataka has already asked for 5,600 more buses to be added to its fleet to meet the growing demand.

The Knit Wits

For over twenty years, a group of ladies residing at a senior living community in Dallas have crafted thousands of hand-knit items, bringing warmth and support to children both in Texas and overseas. They call themselves the Knit Wits. Every Friday, they gather around a long table with yarn and knitting needles to lend a hand from their home at Edgemere - and their latest project is a collaboration with Children’s Health in Dallas to create homemade caps for infants facing heart problems. Previously, they've made helmet liners for the troops in Afghanistan and also sent cuddly knit dolls to orphans from Ukraine - interlacing love with service, one yarn loop at a time.

Les Vélos

In Paris, the number of people using bike paths has doubled in the last year, and during rush hour, bicycles now outnumber cars on some of the capital's main roads, reports Le Monde. It's all part of the efforts of mayor, Anne Hidalgo, for Paris to become "la capitale mondiale du vélo" (the world's cycling capital).

No Need to Worry

Wallace and Gromit studio Aardman Animations has reassured its fans, and the film industry at large, that production of its popular films will not be grinding to a halt any time soon, saying “there is absolutely no need to worry”. After reports that the manufacturers of Aardman’s favoured modelling clay had gone out of business, meaning the animators had enough supplies for only one more film, Aardman issued a statement on social media saying: “We are touched about recent concern over the future of our beloved clay creations, but wanted to reassure fans that there is absolutely no need to worry.” Adding: "We have been tinkering away behind the scenes for quite some time with plans in place to ensure a smooth transition to new stocks to continue to make our iconic productions.” Watch the first full trailer for the forthcoming Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.

School Meals

School feeding programs are some of the biggest social safety nets in the world. The EU just allocated funding to feed 2 million primary school students in Afghanistan; the Philippines has set aside $280 million for national school feeding programs; and Niger is rolling out free meals to all boarding school students. Meanwhile, there's a vast school meals program in Nairobi. As the four million residents of Kenya's capital city sleep, 'the largest green kitchen in Africa' comes to life in a building on the edge of the city’s industrial district, preparing 60,000 meals for children every day as part of the largest school meals program in Africa.
