As Wimbledon approaches its 2023 climax, let's take a look back at some of Arthur Ashe's most notable observations on life.
But, first, here's quick recap about the man. Born in 1943, Ashe was an American professional tennis player who won three Grand Slam singles titles. He started to play tennis at six years old and was awarded a tennis scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles in 1963. He became the first black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team, and the only black man ever to win the singles title at the US Open (1968), the Australian Open (1970), and Wimbledon (1975). He retired in 1980.
Here are some Arthur Ashe quotations:
"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."
"From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life."
"Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome."
"One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation."
"True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost."
"The ideal attitude is to be physically loose and mentally tight."
"Trust has to be earned, and should come only after the passage of time."
"If I were to say, 'God, why me?' about the bad things, then I should have said, 'God, why me?' about the good things that happened in my life."
"Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance."
