On paper, Bullitt is a 113-minute Steve McQueen vehicle (pun intended) about a detective in San Francisco with the appropriately neo-noirish name of Frank Bullitt.

In practice, the movie released in 1970, is more like 103 minutes of narrative wrapping to justify a situation where McQueen's character can drive his 1968 Mustang fastback into a chase with a 1968 Dodge Charger through the streets of San Francisco. That chase goes on for 10 glorious minutes - initially supported by a classic 1970s soundtrack, until the guttural roar of the car engines take over - highlighted by dramatic jumps and a rain of hubcaps flying off cars at unbelievable rates.

Aficionados will be pleased to know that that chase is now on YouTube, in full, in a high-quality upload by the rights-holders at Warner Bros.

Bullitt (McQueen) is first slowly pursued by hitmen in the Charger, but the tables soon turn and Bullitt's Mustang is the one chasing the Charger through the city. Body roll, tire smoke, and roaring engines follow until McQueen eventually gets the best of his foes in a fiery ending.

Is it the best car chase ever? You decide...
