Millions of Americans packed up and moved in 2025, and a new report reveals where they decided to go.

Moving company United Van Lines has released its Annual National Movers Study, showing the states with the highest percentages of inbound and outbound moves.
It also reveals why people are moving, with the four major factors being the opportunity to be closer to family (29%), company transfer/new job (26%), retirement (14%) and lifestyle change (10%). Other interesting motivations uncovered within the report's relocation patterns include a broad migration shift toward smaller cities and towns
Oregon leads the nation in inbound moves for the first time, while New Jersey tops the outbound list for the eighth consecutive year but with positive momentum from GenZ and younger millennials moving into the state.

Oregon's top spot for the highest percentage of newcomers settling in - 64.5 percent of moves were inbound, while 35.5 percent were outbound - is perhaps a promising sign for a state that has seen slow population growth in recent years. The primary motivations for people heading into the Beaver State were job-seeking at 36 percent, family at 25 percent, and lifestyle coming in third at 16 percent.
In second, third, and fourth place for inbound moves were West Virginia, South Carolina and Delaware. Conversely, New Jersey had the highest percentage of outbound moves (62%), followed by New York, California, and North Dakota.
