Mid week round up of good news nuggets from around the world.

  • We've all got used to enjoying a huge variety of gins in recent years. In France, the same thing is now happening to pastis. Traditionally, the aperitif is associated with sleepy French village squares, and bars selling just one or two brands: Ricard or Pernod. But thanks to a burgeoning movement driven by artisanal distillers, drinkers are discovering a new wave of pastis made with a wide range of botanicals that add more flavour. Next time you stroll past what looks like a classic patisserie, check the spelling!

  • Canada plans to resettle more than 20,000 vulnerable Afghans including women leaders, human rights workers and reporters to protect them from Taliban reprisals, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino says. The effort is in addition to an earlier initiative to welcome thousands of Afghans who worked for the Canadian government, such as interpreters, embassy workers and their families.

  • Suffering from a sunburn and just used the last drop of aloe vera gel? Don’t fret - the good news is that there’s a lesser-known sunburn soothing remedy that you may already have in your cabinet: argan oil. Thanks to its antioxidants, it has actually been used for generations to help prevent sun damage. It's rich in fatty acids which help keep your skin moist and offer relief if the sunburn starts to peel. Also, argan oil has anti-inflammatory properties that make it a fantastic remedy for skin barrier repair. Easing inflammation will also help make the burn feel less tender or itchy while it heals. Just be sure to use 100 percent argan oil (with no fragrances added).

  • The 6,000-plus islands that make up the Japanese archipelago have a new addition, after scientists said an undersea volcanic eruption 1,200km (745 miles) south of Tokyo had created a new landmass. The island was formed in the Pacific Ocean about 50km south of Minami Ioto, the southernmost island of the Ogasawara group. Japan’s coastguard said the new island is crescent-shaped with a diameter of about 1km.

  • It's been a good week for The Weeknd. The singer has broken the record for the longest-charting song in the US, with his song Blinding Lights – first released in November 2019 – spending 88 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. Currently at No 18, it looks set to extend its run. The record was previously held by rock band Imagine Dragons, whose song Radioactive spent 87 weeks on the chart between 2012 and 2014.

  • On the subject of numbers, you will no doubt recall that Pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, with an infinite number of digits following the decimal point. At it's basic level Pi = 3.14. But that's not good enough for some Swiss researchers who have just calculated Pi to a new world-record level of exactitude, hitting 62.8tn figures using a supercomputer. Researchers are waiting for the Guinness Book of Records to certify their feat. Until then they have revealed only the final 10 digits they calculated for Pi: 7817924264.

  • Israel has begun giving a third jab of the Covid vaccine to over-50s as early data suggests the booster dose is highly effective in protecting the elderly and vulnerable against severe illness.
