World's Best Beach
If you needed fresh ammunition for your “actually, Southeast Asia has the best beaches” argument, here it is. Entalula Beach in the Philippines has just been crowned the best beach in the world for 2026 by The World’s 50 Best Beaches - compiled with input from more than 1,000 travel professionals, who evaluate contenders based on everything from untouched nature and lack of overcrowding to calm conditions, wildlife, and natural soundtrack. Entalula rose to the top because it “delivers on every level our judges prioritise” - not just in terms of clear water and powdery sand, but for its towering limestone cliffs, dense greenery, and seclusion that has become increasingly rare on globally recognised shorelines.

Smart Movie Theatre
When’s the last time a movie made your heart race? Palms sweat? Endorphins go through the roof from laughing so hard? That’s the data the 'Smart Cinema' is keeping track of. The first-of-its-kind cinema located at the University of Bristol features heart rate monitors, EEG headsets, and infrared cameras to track viewers’ pulses, brain waves, body heat, skin responses, and eye movements. The goal is to capture real-time reactions so studios can learn what resonates with viewers - an alternative to audience surveys given after screenings.

New Baggage Handler
Japan Airlines is testing humanoid robots for ground operations at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport amid chronic labor shortages. The airline is partnering with GMO AI & Robotics to trial robots for tasks such as baggage loading and cabin cleaning. The initiative comes as Japan’s aviation sector struggles with rising tourism demand and a shrinking workforce, driven by an aging population.
Marathon Raises £95m
The weather was perfect, the crowds in good humour. This year's London Marathon saw thousands of runners take to the streets of the UK capital, reaffirming its status as the world’s largest annual one-day fundraising event. This year was no exception, with more than £95 million ($129m) raised.

Youth Triumphs Again
Italian driver Kimi Antonelli won the F1 Miami Grand Prix at the weekend. It was the third straight win for the 19-year-old Antonelli, making him the youngest ever to lead the Formula 1 World Championship. The international (but Eurocentric) sport has exploded in popularity in the US, fueled in part by the soap opera-esque Netflix show Drive to Survive. Formula 1 now hosts annual races in three cities across the country, with the next US race being held in Austin, Texas, in October, followed by November's Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Win Win
Silicon Ranch has brought something online commercially that you don’t see every day: a utility-scale solar farm where cattle graze under moving panels. The Nashville-based developer has launched its new “CattleTracker” system at the Christiana Solar Ranch in Tennessee. It’s the first commercial deployment of the company’s patented approach to combining solar generation with full-scale beef cattle operations on the same land. Instead of fencing off solar farms from agriculture, Silicon Ranch is designing its projects to coexist with agriculture. The system uses a custom solar tracker that can shift into a “grazing mode,” giving cattle space to move safely beneath the panels.
“You gave me what you did not have, and I gave you what I had to give - together, we made something greater from the difference.” Alberto Rios

5 May 1921: Perfume Chanel No. 5 is released by fashion designer Coco Chanel. She commissioned perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a "woman’s perfume, with a woman’s scent" that was modern, complex, and unlike the single-flower scents popular at the time. The bottle was designed with a minimalist aesthetic, featuring a clean, rectangular shape and a white label, contrasting with the ornate perfume bottles of that era.
