Whale shark
Biggest Omnivore

Researchers have made a surprising discovery about the dining habits of whale sharks, handing the largest fish in the sea another world title. It turns out the ocean giants routinely enjoy a seaweed salad alongside hefty helpings of krill, meaning they have officially dethroned the Kodiak bear as the world’s biggest omnivore. Scientists made the discovery while studying whale sharks off Western Australia’s Ningaloo reef and say it is cause for a re-think about what is really sustaining the super-sized species.

Conservation Success

A conservation program that started in the 1970s for the New Zealand Kākāpō has increased the crazy parrot’s numbers to the highest recorded since it began. Following the second-most successful breeding season on record, the population has reached 216 birds after 55 chicks survived childhood to become juveniles. Science adviser at the kākāpō recovery program Dr. Andrew Digby, explains that they’re doing everything they can to keep genetic lineages as diverse as possible, since over-fathering by dominant males can be a problem. He explained to the New Zealand press that if a male was found to be fathering too many chicks, it would be relocated to another island.

Ukrainian Outpost

Renowned Ukrainian chef Yurii Kovryzhenko is preparing to open a bistro in London that will be staffed by Ukrainian refugees. He and his partner Olga Tsybytovska were visiting from Kyiv for an event at the Ukrainian Embassy when Russia invaded in February. They have been in London ever since. They decided to launch Mriya, which will serve Ukrainian dishes made from British products with a touch of the influences Yurii picked up from other countries. Mriya means "dream" in Ukrainian. The couple hope the restaurant will become a meeting point for Ukrainians and other refugees in London.

Office Plants

People with plants in their workspaces reported feeling more productive and had a 12 percent faster reaction time on computer tests compared to those without plants, according to a study from Washington State University. Having plants around the workspace also reduced stress as measured by blood pressure readings.

Dolphin swimming over coral

A new study found that dolphin poop plays a “significant role” in helping coral reefs survive. By excreting waste in shallow lagoons, the dolphins provide vital nutrients to the coral, and reinforce the need to protect the dolphins, too.

Nova Scotia recently passed the new Mi’kmaw Language Act which officially recognizes Mi’kmaw as the province’s first language. The act will come into effect on 1 October. "I felt like I was being a party of history," said Pictou Landing First Nation chief Andrea Paul. "Just decades ago, our language wasn’t welcome here in this land," said Eskasoni First Nation chief Leroy Denny. "We were forced to lose our language and not to speak it." Premier Tim Houston believes the act is another important step to reconciliation
