New Jaguar Sighting

The spots gave it away. Just like a human fingerprint, the rosette pattern on each jaguar is unique so researchers knew they had a new animal on their hands after reviewing images captured by a remote camera in southern Arizona. The University of Arizona Wild Cat Research and Conservation Center says it’s the fifth big cat over the last 15 years to be spotted in the area after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. “We’re very excited. It signifies this edge population of jaguars continues to come here because they’re finding what they need,” Susan Malusa, director of the center’s jaguar and ocelot project. Adding: “That’s the message - that this species is recovering. We want people to know that and that we still do have a chance to get it right and keep these corridors open.”

Can’t Stop Me Now

At 85, Sir Cliff Richard is out on the road again. Last month, he finished a run of shows in Australia and New Zealand. He was the artist who opened the British rock’n’roll era, with Move It in 1958 - and the UK leg of his Can’t Stop Me Now tour, opening in Cardiff, is finishing at the Royal Albert Hall tonight. After 67 years he is still selling out big rooms. So what’s behind his enduring appeal? To the uninitiated, Sir Cliff’s continued presence in the music space is, at best, a mystery, and at worst an affront to taste. That is to misunderstand him: because Sir Cliff doesn’t so much operate in the music business as he does in the Cliff Richard business.

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’” Lewis Carroll

Drawing of the first ever traffic light - erected outside the Houses of Parliament in London

9 December 1868: The world's first traffic light (known as a street semaphore) was erected outside the Houses of Parliament in London; however, it was removed a month later after a gas leak caused one of the lights to explode. The device was removed, and traffic signals didn't reappear in London until electric versions in the 1920s, with the technology being developed further in the U.S. in the interim.
