The Quiet Predator

An image of the Shark Nebula, which is some 650 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus, has been crowned the overall winner of this year’s ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. InThe Quiet Predator, the nebula’s silhouette is formed by thick clouds of interstellar dust and gas that block the light of background stars. "This predator drifts silently through space, camouflaged against the faint glow of the background stars, lit only by nearby blue-coloured reflection nebulae," said photographer Ali Alobaidly.

Forest floor covered in acorns
How is it for you?
Mast Year?

Some years, an oak drops a handful of acorns. Other years it drops thousands, and so does every other oak for hundreds of miles. Squirrels look overwhelmed. Then the next fall, almost nothing. If your street is suddenly paved in acorns this week, you might be standing in a mast year. It's a season when oaks across a whole region produce a huge acorn crop at once. A single large oak can drop as many as 10,000 acorns. A forest floor can hold more than 250,000 per acre. It happens roughly every two to five years, with lean years in between. How's 2026 looking in your neighbourhood?

The newest member of Mexico's national guard.

Comando may be tiny, but Mexico’s national guard is giving him a very big role. Outfitted with miniature goggles, a fitted tactical vest, a helmet and even a petite head-mounted camera, the 7kg (15lb) chihuahua has become the most unusual - and smallest - canine member of the force. Officers said the 13-month-old pup is being trained not just as a crowd-pleasing mascot but for search-and-rescue work as well. Lt ‌Debora Hernandez said Comando challenges two stereotypes: that only big dogs can serve in the national guard, and that a military-style force cannot build a warmer connection with the public. His presence, she said, reminds people that “beneath the uniform, we are human beings”.

NYC by Hermès

The architectural beauty of New York City does not lie in individual buildings, but in the way its hundreds of high rises, side by side, form a breathtaking skyline that captivates both tourists and locals. Inspired by this, Hermès celebrated the opening of its new flagship store in Brooklyn with a dinner for 250 guests, where New York took center stage, quite literally. The creative team came up with a long, winding table where an illuminated model of the NYC skyline ran along the center. Hundreds upon hundreds of small, yet detailed buildings served as the centerpiece. Rather than going for an accurate depiction, the artists went for a clearly human, hand-decorated approach, adding charm to the overall scene.

135,000 tickets for Glastonbury Festival 2027 sold out in 42 minutes, organisers have said. Thousands of people joined the online queue on Sunday morning in the hope of securing tickets to the festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset, which returns from 23 to 27 June after a fallow year. Organisers confirmed last month that tickets for the weekend were at their highest price ever - £408, including a £5 booking fee per ticket - an increase of £29.50 from the last event in 2025. Headliners have yet to be announced but organiser Emily Eavis previously said the team was "very excited" and things were "coming together really well".

EV Surge in UK

UK EV sales hit a new all-time record in September. The country registered 99,199 battery-electric cars last month, up 36 percent from a year ago and good for 28 percent of the market, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

"Ending its Addiction"

Heat pump sales have climbed across European Union nations since the Hormuz crisis, figures from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) show. Around 1.16 million were sold in the first six months of the year. “Europe is ending its addiction to a toxic, costly drug from dodgy suppliers - gas,” said Paul Kenny, EHPA director general.
