Cheetah Returns

The cheetah was extinct in India 70 years ago, but now it is back. South Africa is to send twelve cheetahs per year for the next 8 to 10 years, with the first cheetahs arriving in India this month. The reason why the cheetah became extinct in India was because their habitat was shrinking and they were heavily hunted. The new cheetahs will be distributed over large nature reserves where they will be protected from hunting and will have plenty of space. Historically, cheetahs were abundant in a belt from Africa across the Middle East to India, but now they remain largely confined to Africa.

Grinch Sequel

A sequel to Dr Seuss’s 1957 book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is to be published later this year. How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, written by Alastair Heim and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz, will pick up one year after the action of the original. It is an official sequel but not based on anything from the archive of Theodor Geisel, AKA Dr Seuss. The new book will mark the first time the Grinch narrative has been expanded beyond the original book. Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr Seuss Enterprises, the company that preserves and protects the author’s legacy, said that the move to extend the story had been “carefully considered”.

Indigenous Empowerment

British Columbia is changing its forest management approach to include greater participation of Indigenous communities in land-use decisions and accelerate the protection of old-growth forests. The new measures will herald the end of prioritising timber extraction over biodiversity and carbon storage, reports Narwhal. "After decades of short-term and transactional thinking, we’re making significant changes in our approach to forestry in this province. The first step is putting Indigenous Peoples at the centre of land management decisions in their territories. The days of making decisions without Indigenous Peoples are over," says David Eby, Premier of British Columbia.

Quid Pro Quo

“Take care of your forest, turning it into a garden for you and for society. In exchange we will connect your home to clean water.” A water program in Bolivia dreamed up by five people a decade ago has protected over 500,000 hectares of forest (almost 2,000 square miles). The program helps farmers in upper watersheds provide urban residents with drinking water in exchange for protection of their water-producing forests. 24,000 farmers have joined the program, which will soon be replicated in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico, reports Mongabay.

Fur Sale Ban

California has become the first US state to ban the sale of new animal fur products both online and in-store. The law, which was introduced in 2019, was implemented in January 2023. According to Plant Based News, fur farms are now illegal in Norway, Croatia, Italy, the UK, and Czechia, and activists believe the end of this cruel industry is in sight.

Cancer Detection

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Britain and a new single blood test that picks up prostate cancer in 100 percent of cases is being hailed as a game-changer. The liquid biopsy can detect circulating tumour cells and offers ‘huge potential’ in the early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
