Mid week collection of positive news snippets.

  • Venus: Man's relentless search for signs of life beyond our planet may just have found it. The scientists have not (yet) claimed to have found evidence of life, only for “anomalous and unexplained chemistry”. But, as Sherlock Holmes famously said to Dr Watson: “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.”

  • Oil titan BP says that renewable power is growing faster than any other fuel in history.

  • In a landmark move, Portland, Oregon, has enacted the nation's most stringent, sweeping facial recognition ban. That's good news for people concerned about creeping surveillance and the erosion of civil liberties.

  • 'Hi, this is Navalny': poisoned Russian opposition leader posts on Instagram. In good news for Alexei Navalny and, perhaps, Russian democracy, he posted from hospital in Berlin that he can now breathe independently again, needing no external support.

  • England: There are so many ways to show that you care and are thinking of others. Like the group of people who have been carrying out small acts of kindness in and around a town in Hertfordshire.

  • Denmark: Lego to switch to eco-friendly paper bags in its packaging. Toy company says it will invest £310m in sustainability over the next three years.

  • Female Surfer Breaks Record: A Brazilian surfer broke her own Guinness World Records title by riding an epic wave in Portugal. Enjoy this awesome video.

  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Keeping food fresh without refrigeration is near impossible in the scorching climate in the region. But it's hard to power fridges in a region where almost 600 million people live off the grid. However, a company has developed a pay-as-you-go solar-powered fridge. It's great news for small business owners, who are snapping them up.
