Capture The Dark
There is something about stepping outside after dark and looking up that instantly puts life into perspective. The noise fades, the sky opens up, and suddenly you’re staring at a universe far bigger than your daily to-do list. Capture the Dark 2026 captures that feeling. The winning images take us from sweeping night landscapes and brilliant stars to deep-sky observations and creative interpretations of the darkness. One of the 2026 winners is this striking photograph of New Zealand’s South Island sky with the Milky Way shining brightly. It is the sixth edition of the annual night-time photography competition, which drew 2,288 submissions from 30 countries.
Masterpieces Found
Long after closing time, the thieves slipped into the dark museum through a window. Security footage shows them quietly removing three pieces from the wall. The artworks were worth more than $10 million, and they had vanished in less than three minutes. In good news for the Magnani-Rocca Foundation, a museum located about 12 miles from Parma, Italy, the missing artworks have been recovered. Police found them inside an empty television box at a home nearby. “They were professionals,” said an official. “But we were better.” The artworks in question are Paul Cézanne’s Still Life With Cherries (worth around $7 million), Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Les Poissons ($3.5 million) and Henri Matisse’s Odalisque on the Terrace ($23,000).
Box Office Voyage
The Odyssey has notched another record on its epic box office voyage. Christopher Nolan‘s blockbuster is officially the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with $1.352 billion worldwide. It's a massive tally for any movie, but especially an R-rated sword-and-sandal adventure that’s nearly three hours long. It overtakes the benchmark set by 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine with $1.338 billion. Among its many other box office milestones, The Odyssey ranks as Nolan’s biggest movie of all time, surpassing 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion, not adjusted for inflation), as well as Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time, outpacing 2009’s Avatar.

Two endangered California condors recently swung by a trail camera in the Bakersfield area, much to the delight of conservationists who have been hard at work trying to revive the species since it was nearly wiped out four decades ago. Luckily, an ongoing breeding program that began in 1983 has been a great success, as condors continue to breed in the wild these days - and photobomb trail cameras.
First Nations Victories
Australian courts have recognised the Eastern Kuku Yalanji’s native title over a vast stretch of their ancestral Country in Cape York, including the remaining parts of the Daintree (Earth’s oldest surviving rainforest, 180 million years old). It’s the result of a decades-long process involving more than 100 family groups who joined forces to prove their claim. Two days later the neighbouring Western Yalanji won recognition over their ancestral land too. Together, the decisions cover 1,500 sq. miles (3,887 sq. km), an area larger than Yosemite National Park.
China Hits 60 Percent
New energy vehicles made up more than 60 percent of China’s car sales in July, the first time the monthly figure has crossed that line. Almost two in every three new cars sold last month were the kind you plug in first, rather than fill up, backed by a charging network that has grown to more than 23 million points nationwide.
