2025 marks the 60th anniversary of The Sound of Music - and there are plenty of ways to celebrate before the year is out.

The movie returned to theaters nationwide in the USA last week and, no doubt, in many other countries too. Released in 1965, telling the story of the von Trapp family's escape from the Nazi's, it reigned for five years as the highest-grossing film in history. Its breathtaking photography and its many memorable songs, among them My Favorite Things, helped it to become an enduring classic. The nearly three-hour-long movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won five, including those for best picture and best director.

Perhaps remarkably, many of the actors in the movie are still close today. Angela Cartwright, who played Brigitta von Trapp in the film, told People that she and the rest of the then-child actors are still close well into their 60s and 70s. “We call ourselves ‘Non-Trapps,’” said 73-year-old Cartwright. “We visit, we’ve been at births and marriages and deaths and been through experiences together.” She also waxed lyrical about working with Julie Andrews: “Between takes … she would sing, she would teach us songs, we would dance, and she was part of that. She didn’t go off to her dressing room. She was a real part of us being a family.”

For fans who know the words to the songs by heart, the Hollywood Bowl is hosting an anniversary watch party of the movie on Saturday, along with a sing-along and costume contest. The outdoor amphitheater in Los Angeles has been conducting sing-alongs since 2000, including a sold-out celebration of the movie's 50th birthday.

But, if you're not going to that, and would like to revisit old memories of the film, why not take a look at the night in 2022 when Cartwright and her castmates’ led a sing-along tribute to Julie Andrews at the 48th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute. You may even feel like singing along too.
