St. Augustine, Florida

It’s a well-known fun fact that St. Augustine, Florida, is the nation’s oldest continually inhabited city, founded by a Spanish soldier in 1565. Less talked about is that the coastal city was under Great Britain’s control for a brief stint in the 1700s, a period of history that has been mostly forgotten, with little evidence to show for it. That changed when archaeologists identified the dry moat of a 1781 British redoubt, a fortified military outpost. “St. Augustine had a 20-year British period,” city archaeologist Andrea White told the Associated Press. “They came, and they built seven of these redoubts, and nobody has ever found any archaeologically. We have rough ideas of where they were, and they show up on historic maps. But we’ve never found actual, tangible, archaeological evidence for any of them until recently.”

Record Numbers

Hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes are once again flocking to central Nebraska during their annual migration and, as they reach the likely peak of their migration this year, the birds all seem to be happy and healthy, reports NTV News. Nebraska biologists have another reason to celebrate: During their latest weekly aerial crane survey, the fifth week of the migration, they counted roughly 736,000 sandhill cranes between the towns of Chapman and Overton, Nebraska, which are roughly 80 miles apart. That’s an all-time, record-high number of cranes counted in the region at once - and it’s probably an underestimate. The migration takes place from February through April, with individual birds staggering their arrivals and departures. Each bird typically spends about a month in central Nebraska, fattening up on kernels of corn left behind during the last fall’s harvest. Then, they take to the skies and continue north to Alaska, Canada and eastern Siberia.

No Gym? No Problem

A recent study found that running up and down stairs as fast as possible may improve muscle power in older adults. Researchers asked healthy adults between the ages of 65 and 80 to one of two leg workouts: using a leg-press machine or intense bursts of stair-climbing. The study found that both groups gained muscle power and functionality - two things that tend to weaken with age. The participants also saw improvements in their walking speed and time required to stand up from a chair. Notably, the more powerful muscles are, the easier it is to react quickly and catch yourself if you start to fall, a skill that can be lifesaving, especially for adults over 60.

Delhi's New Lungs

New Delhi, India’s capital, struggles with extremely poor air quality and heat waves. In response, since 2004, the city has created seven large “biodiversity parks” on previously degraded land, offering a hopeful example of urban ecological restoration. The Aravalli Biodiversity Park is now a thriving forest of native plants. The Neela Hauz Biodiversity Park is home to a lake that was once a dumping ground for untreated sewage. All seven parks were restored by the Delhi Development Authority and the University of Delhi and together span 2,026 acres.
